A couple of weeks ago, I went to a friend’s house and saw his children playing a puzzle game. Immediately, I had a rush of positive feelings from my childhood; my mother bought some games for us – puzzles, Monopoly, snake and ladder, crossword puzzles, etc.
We regularly had Saturdays we tagged game day; on such days, we would wake up early, prepare the meals for the day and do our chores; by 10 am, we would have finished the housework and then spend the rest of the day playing the selected game(s) with our mother.
I believe this was one of the activities that helped us bond as a family – a closeness we enjoy to date.
What family activity did you enjoy as a child? How did the activity make you the person you are now?
What culture are you creating now as a family that your children would relish as adults?
One of our favourite games back then was Monopoly – I only wish that, as children, we played the game with the financial knowledge I have now.
That day as I watched my friend’s children play that puzzle, I committed to creating a games day culture in my home. I also resolved to design it so my children can learn money lessons, build resilience and self-control, and reinforce family values – as we play.
